About the event
According to the latest data, Indonesia is the second-largest contributor of marine plastic waste in the world. Each year, approximately 6.8 million tons of plastic waste are produced, with 40% ending up in the ocean. Research by Dr. I Gede Hendrawan (Udayana University) reveals that ocean currents carry waste from East Java and West Bali to the southern coast of Bali, including Kelan Beach.
Furthermore, in the first half of 2025, more than 25 cases of stranded marine mammals were recorded along the coast of Bali. In over 80% of these cases, plastic was found in the digestive systems of the animals. This situation is worsened by climate change and tourism pressure, which further accelerate the degradation of coastal ecosystems.
